The curriculum of St Mary’s is broad and balanced and aims to develop the full potential of each child, in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. In addition to Religious Education (‘Here I am’ programme of study).

Foundation Stage (from a child’s third birthday to the end of the Reception year):

Early learning goals set out what the children are expected to achieve during this year. The six areas of learning are: personal, social and emotional development; language and literacy; mathematical development; knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development and creative development.

Key Stages 1 & 2
3 core subjects:
English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Foundation Subjects:
Science Design & Technology (DT), History and Geography (Humanities), Art and Design, Music, Physical Education and Modern Foreign Language (Pupils in Year 2 and Key Stage 2 study Italian).

As the children move through the school, their progress is measured against clear objectives, outcomes of which are regularly shared with parents during parent consultation evenings, open evenings and more formally through end of year reports. Results of national tests are published annually and results for the current year can be found in the appendices of this brochure.

Underpinning the curriculum at St Mary’s is our particular faith dimension which compels the faithful to ask questions:

What Does God Want me to be?

What does God want me to do?

The school provides many opportunities to develop pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship are developed as both cross-curricular themes and as specific topics.

These and the further activities offered through our extended curriculum, provide pupils with the tools to engage with the world at large using skills of communication, application, collaboration, self reflection, assessment and evaluation, information processing, reasoning, enquiry, creative and critical thinking, to provide well rounded views of the world for their own good and good of others, both now and in the future (sustainable development).

All curriculum and school structures have been agreed with the support of staff and governors and ensure that all aspects of the Every Child Matters Agenda are regularly reviewed and new opportunities sought to provide continued growth and development.

At St Mary’s we attempt to make the curriculum more coherent by using topics or themes wherever possible. We believe that this approach can provide the links to reality required for effective learning, but can also provide opportunities for great stimulus, motivation and creative thinking.
